“Dadiotiki Estia”
In 1984, on 21 November — the day of the local feast of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, known as Panagia Mesosporitissa, a celebration connected with agriculture and the sowing of cereals — the Association was inspired to organise a three-day exhibition of bread and other cereal-based products. This exhibition continues to be held every two years to this day.
It was through this exhibition that the idea of establishing the Bread Museum was conceived and developed.
The Bread Museum was founded in 2003 with the scientific support of the Centre for Research of Greek Folklore, Academy of Athens. It is housed in the Papakosteio Cultural Centre of Amfikleia and is a monographic museum, focusing on bread as its central theme and exploring it in relation to local history, society, traditions, customs and regional characteristics.
Within the same premises, the Museum of Traditional Trades also operates, showcasing valuable heritage objects collected and preserved with the help of the residents of Amfikleia and the members of the Association, as well as a hall dedicated to the collections of the late Prime Minister from Amfikleia, Athanasios Eftaxias. ACTIVITIES
The Association has published a cookbook titled “Traditional Preparations”, as well as a CD featuring traditional songs from Amfikleia.
Its traditional dance groups, made up of children, teenagers and adults, participate in various events both in Greece and abroad.
The Association also maintains its own costume collection, featuring local traditional attire for men, women and children.
Each year, it revives many local customs, such as the tradition of Chondros, which takes place on 5 December.
